Re: How much carbon dioxide removal and by when?

February 24, 2026

Last week we were talking about how you think about goals for climate action. Thanks to everybody who responded. I really liked the responses I got - though I didn't get a ton of responses.

Because of that, this week I want to ask a different question (video on YouTube and LinkedIn).

It's a related question, and it's especially for those of you who I haven't heard from yet. I don't expect some super polished answers on these things. Even a rough sketch of how you see these pieces fit together would be really valuable.

With that, here's the question:

What's your comprehensive plan for a stable climate?

Maybe you have an answer right away. Great. Hit reply, or copy me on your Google Doc, schedule a call, or however you have it, I want to hear all about it.

And maybe it'll be helpful for me to unpack this question a bit. And again, not looking for something super polished here, just a sense of how the pieces in your head fit together.

First off, what does "stable climate" mean to you? It might sound like temperature targets: 1.5˚C, 2˚C. Maybe you think about parts per million of carbon dioxide, net zero, net negative. Or maybe you think about it more broadly, like "the climate that I grew up in," or "a just, sustainable world."

Whatever it is, jot that part down. And this part matters a lot, because everything downstream of your comprehensive plan depends on it.

Then let's talk about how you think about the plan to get to what you just defined as a stable climate. An easy way to start is, do you have any dates that come to mind, or are there dates and targets that you think about often? "We're going to hit this by this year, and to get there we need to do this and that along the way." It might be dates for carbon dioxide levels, emissions levels, temperatures. Maybe it's "we need to hit net zero, and that's decarbonization plus a bit of carbon removal, and here's the pieces along the way needed for that to happen."

Whatever your answers are, I'd love to hear from you about this. I'm not looking for polished answers, just a rough sketch of how you think about it.

Here's an example from a friend of mine. My purpose in sharing this is to give you an example of what a comprehensive plan can look like. (To be clear - I don't want your responses to this plan. I want to hear what your plan is!). Here we go:

That is what a comprehensive plan for stabilizing the climate sounds like. Do I agree with every point in that plan? Do I agree with where it's all headed? That's not what this is about. I just wanted to give you an example of that, that's how the pieces can fit together.

I'd love to hear from you. Maybe it's something that's rough that you're thinking about for the first time. Maybe you've got some of these pieces coming together. Maybe you've got a big Google Doc where you think about this stuff constantly. I want to hear about all of it, whether it's typed out or you want to hop on a call.

Hit reply, I look forward to hearing from you.
