I'm headed to Mauna Kea!

January 06, 2026

The 2025 average carbon dioxide level from Mauna Loa is up!

As I wrote last week:

My plan is to go back up the mountain and post the 2025 data point to the Ethereum blockchain from up on the mountain and update the visualization. The data may be posted early this year, or it might be later toward spring so stay on the lookout for that.

This morning NOAA updated its website with a fresh datapoint of the 2025 MLO carbon dioxide average: 427.35 parts per million of carbon dioxide.

That means on Wednesday night I'm heading up to Mauna Kea* to celebrate at 13,803 feet!

As you may know, the Mauna Loa Observatory, data source of the famous Keeling Curve, is under threat of shutdown with the latest budget cuts. There's no telling how much longer the observatory will be operational, so let's get the fun in while we can. I may even be able to post this data to the Ethereum blockchain while I'm up there!

Aloha,

Tito

P.S. this is a longshot, but if by some chance you're visiting the Big Island this week, hit reply and come join me on Mauna Kea!

* I'll be on the neighbor mountain Mauna Kea since the road to Mauna Loa is closed to the public by a lava flow!
