From 13,803 feet up on Mauna Kea, Hawaii

January 13, 2026

The latest US Federal budget cuts all funding to the Mauna Loa Observatory (MLO). (video of this update on LinkedIn and YouTube)

If you're into climate science, you've probably heard of the Keeling Curve, the chart showing the steep rise of carbon dioxide in Earth's atmosphere since 1958.

All that data comes from MLO.

Without funding MLO will shut down, the data will no longer continue, and humanity will lose the one consistent data set showing the daily rise of carbon dioxide.

Imagine we were able to fund MLO for the next three years. Just a minimal budget, keep the staff, the power turned on, utilities, and the inert gases they need to be able to make the comparison measurements.

That's a world where we have a continuous data set that runs from 1958 onwards for future generations to see the rise of carbon dioxide - and eventually cheer drawdown when we pause and then reverse carbon dioxide levels.

Friends of MLO, if you want to be informed about this effort, hit reply. If you want to be involved, helping raise money, communicate with media, or lead, hit reply.

Let's make sure that the Mauna Loa dataset that started in 1958 continues forever.
