Hi,
For the first time, the United Nations has put carbon dioxide removal into the executive summary of the Emissions Gap report. (video on YouTube and LinkedIn)
Now, you might be saying, "the UN puts out a lot of reports. There was even one a month ago! Why is this one any different?"
Yes, for the last 10 years, I've been reading those reports, and you've read those reports. And carbon dioxide removal is in there, but for lack of a better term, kind of buried in there. You know, it's on page 50. There's a chart that you have to kind of wring out the X and the Y axes and say, okay, that looks like 10 billion tons per year by 2050.
This is the very first time that carbon dioxide removal is at the level of the executive summary. And there's a quantity, too! The report says we need removals of "atmosphere and its permanent sequestration of roughly 320 GtCO2 over the course of this century in order to return warming to 1.5°C by 2100".
If you've been talking about carbon dioxide removal, you've been referencing the 2018 work from the IPCC. We've used that report as as the cornerstone for the last 8 years of progress on carbon dioxide removal. Let's make this report our new cornerstone for the next 8 years.
