Axios takes the carbon removal handshake viral ๐Ÿ–๏ธโœŠ๐Ÿ‘Š

January 23, 2024

Off the snowy streets of Davos, I walked into Axios House with Harris from Charm Industrial. (here's a video of this update if you prefer watching)

Harris immediately recognized Mike Allen, the co-founder of news site Axios. We said hi and I asked Mike "Do you know the carbon removal handshake?". He filmed it for his newsletter and sent the video out to his 6.7 million subscribers.

Here's the coverage - and a GIF of the handshake!

The carbon removal handshake started at CDR Basel in April 2023. It hit me that greenhouse gas removal is going to be a huge thing, the fastest growing industry in our lifetime. We need a special handshake to symbolize carbon removal.

So with my fellow attendees at CDR Basel we came up with the carbon removal handshake, like a fist bump and a boom but in reverse.

Hereโ€™s how it goes (video): You grab the carbon from the sky. Then you fist bump. Then you never let it go.

I've since demoed it at Carbon Unbound, Climate Week, and with people all over the world.

Everyone gets it. Friends get it, journalists get it, even diplomats get it. Mike even immediately shared it with two of his colleagues.

It's more fun than charts, graphs, and climate data. I'm not good at jokes or magic tricks, but every single time people's reaction is to laugh when I say โ€œthen you never let it goโ€.

It works for carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, whatever your favorite greenhouse gas is, and whatever way you want to store it afterwards.

Go share the carbon removal handshake with someone. And you can share the digital version too: ๐Ÿ–๏ธโœŠ๐Ÿ‘Š

It's go time!
